Caring for Vinyl Floors

Vinyl flooring or linoleum is making a comeback and this is in no small part to its durability and ease of maintenance.  While it was considered unfashionable and cheap in recent times, improvements to the appearance and quality of vinyl have lent a helping hand to its resurgence in the flooring market.

Vinyl is quite a popular choice of flooring in rooms such as the bathrooms and kitchens instead of something like laminate flooring due to the fact that it is hardwearing and can be kept clean easily.  It is also moisture proof and will not be damaged by water spillages in these areas as would wood or laminate flooring. With more and more styles becoming available such as wood effect, stone, or vinyl with decorative tiling patterns, it is becoming harder and harder to identify it as vinyl as opposed to tiles on the floor.

It is important to look after your vinyl floor in order to prolong its life.  Although relatively simple to clean and care for, it is advisable to make sure that any spillages are mopped up immediately to prevent any staining which could occur.  Any dirt or dust can be swept and this type of flooring can be mopped with a damp mop using soapy water.  If you have a vinyl floor with a gloss effect you may need to provide extra care to maintain the gloss effect.  There are certain products available for buffing your floor if you notice that it is losing its shine.  If however, your vinyl floor has a matt effect, a simple wash with a damp mop will suffice.  You should avoid using abrasive cleaning products to ensure your vinyl flooring remains free from scratches.

Extra care should be taken when moving kitchen appliances across a vinyl floor as they could damage or tear the vinyl.  This can prove hard to repair and would require the services of a professional.  You should make sure to cover the floor with a protective covering before moving anything heavy.  If however, you do find a scratch or tear in your floor, you should cover this to keep it free from dirt and call in a professional who can assess any damage.   As long as you keep the tear dirt and moisture free, the professionals should be able to repair any damage.

Vinyl floors can be a beautiful addition to your home and can last for many years as long as you take the time to care for them.
