Tips for Painting Your Bathroom

When it comes to redecorating your bathroom an essential part of this is painting.  If you cannot afford to get a whole new bathroom suite, you can still totally transform this room just by changing the colour of the paint and by adding a few matching accessories.  You may want to change the blinds or the toilet seat in order to make this room a little different but the thing that will have the biggest impact on totally transforming your bathroom would be a brand new coat of paint in a completely different colour.

However before you attempt to begin painting your bathroom, you might want to get some advice on how to ensure that you do the best job that you can.  There are a number of tips that you can follow to make sure that the paint job that you give to your bathroom is of the finest quality and that it is easier for you.

You must prepare the walls in your bathroom before you begin to paint.  Make sure that they are dry and free from damp or mould.  If you have any damp or mould patches on the walls or ceiling, then you should treat this first with the appropriate product.  You can find treatments for mould in your local hardware store.  Once you have prepared the walls then you will need to choose the paint.

The choice of paint is important.  There are plenty of paints which you can choose which are specifically designed for bathrooms and kitchens; areas where there are usually excess amounts of moisture.  These paints have a barrier in them which will protect your walls.  If you have walls which are prone to mould or damp then choosing a paint which has a build in mould protection would be a wise choice.

There are other factors when deciding which colour of paint to choose apart from just your personal preferences.  For example you need to choose a shade that will look good in the size of bathroom that you have.  Most people choose light neutral shades for their bathroom which will complement their bathroom suite.  However you might like to choose something completely original; it all depends on what you like.

But one thing to keep in mind when choosing the paint for your bathroom is the size of the bathroom.  If you have a small bathroom then you would not want to choose dark colours as they have the effect of making your room look smaller.  Bright, light colours tend to open up a room and make it look larger so would really be a good choice for a small bathroom.  If however, you have a large bathroom, you do not need to worry about this and can choose any colour or shade that you like.

One useful tip for painting any room would be to place masking tape around the places where you are going to be painting.  For example around door frames and along any tiles that are beside the walls.  This will protect them from getting paint on them and means that you do not have to have a totally steady hand when painting.
